Overview

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national force of youth conservation volunteers, has an exciting opportunity in our Program Department. America’s #1 youth conservation service organization seeks a full-time, year round Project Leader in our Hawley, MA office.

SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps is a residential corps program based in western Massachusetts with corps members serving statewide. The program goal is to provide Environmental Education, Conservation Service, Community Outreach, and Corps Member Development. The program consists of 4 full time staff, and a total of 26 AmeriCorps members that provide over 30,000 hours of service to the people and lands of Massachusetts.

The SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps Project Leader plays a crucial role in the success of the corps program. It is a dynamic position, combining field support, program logistics, and kitchen manager all in to one role. In the fall and winter, the Project Leader will coordinate a kitchen that will regularly feed 20+ people, they will also manage the recruitment of (8) 5 month members. During the spring and summer, the Project Leader will work hand in glove with the Conservation Coordinator working together to provide field support in the form of technical and leadership guidance. Year round, the Project Leader will be responsible for managing the facility, program vehicles, and other tasks as assigned by the Conservation Coordinator. Onsite housing is available.

Primary Responsibilities:

Conservation Crew Support

  • Work with Conservation Coordinator to provide field based supervision and technical and leadership support to 5 active field crews.
  • Coordinate with SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps staff on project schedules, crew management, and resource support.
  • Help facilitate conservation season trainings, with an overlying emphasis on safety.

Kitchen Coordination

  • Coordinate kitchen operations of the program which includes: purchasing and ordering food for 20-30 people, cooking 1-2 community dinners each week for 20+ people, providing menus, cooking support and training for corps members, and cooking for 30+ people during spring trainings.
  • In conjunction with the Program Director, manage the program food budget.

Program Logistics

  • Assist in the coordination and delivery of program orientations and trainings.
  • Manage member recruitment and selection, including application review and interviewing prospective members.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and repairs for all facility systems as outlined in the memorandum of understanding agreed to by SCA and Massachusetts DCR.
  • Ensure that program facilities meet all required state codes, safety reviews are regularly conducted and all “SCA Field Operating Standards” are adhered to.
  • Facilitate the maintenance and safe operation of a fleet of 5 program vehicles.

Program Development and Member Supervision

  • Role model SCA mission and values to members, partners and the public
  • Manage and document member incidents in adherence to SCA standards.
  • Assist Program Director with administrative duties, such as financial and program reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Supplemental Functions:

  • Use of conservation tools, office equipment, some residential equipment (food service).
  • Use of a variety of hand-tools and outdoor equipment.
  • Approximately 80% time traveling during the Conservation Service Season to project sites.
  • Hiking and camping in backcountry and front country settings in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Driving passenger vehicles in a variety of weather conditions and varied terrain for extended periods.
  • Acting as program duty officer

  • Maintain professional, collaborative and courteous relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Provide healthy, varied, balanced meals during program trainings and events and ensure the program kitchen is well stocked and organized.
  • Maintain a well-organized and hygienic program base camp.
  • Ensure that the program facilities meet building, safety, and fire codes.
  • Ensure that kitchen and facilities spending does not exceed budget limits..
  • Participation in training and staff development opportunities as deemed necessary.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with internal and external constituents.
Qualifications
  • 1 – 2 years of experience including skills related to the position such as food preparation, logistics coordination, trail construction and conservation projects, and experience working with partner organizations required.
  • Chainsaw, Griphoist, and carpentry skills/certifications desired.
  • Ability to cook for vegetarians, vegans, and specific food allergies desired.
  • Proven ability to organize and inventory large quantities of supplies and materials.
  • Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards.
  • Current or ability to obtain Wilderness First Responder or higher/ CPR certification.
  • Criminal background check that meets SCA standard required.
  • Community organizing skills and strong capacity to work in a team.
  • Proven organizational and program development skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including effective Microsoft Word, Excel and Internet experience.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
